An interview with
fitness trainer Steve Elbogen.
Interview Part IV
Interviewer:
How did the FLOWBAR come about, what made you think of it and
how did you get the idea for the design?
Steve:
When training people to do pull-ups, I’ve always
had to assist by holding their feet to reduce their body weight.
Some weigh more than others, and throughout the day it can get
tiresome. I have a custom pull-up/dip bar where the dip bar is
higher than normal. One day while training this cute short round
grandma, it dawned on me to have her hold the dip bar handles,
which proved to be the first squat assisted pull-ups at my
studio. Later that day, I couldn’t get the thought out of my
head that I could build a device to go over the door to make it
adjustable for anyone to use. Walla! That’s where it came from.
Interviewer:
After you got the idea, what was
involved to get the product done and packaged? |
|

Steve:
That
night I made a simple prototype using pvc and some nylon
strapping. It worked, which was quite exciting. This was at the
time when the ab roller fad was on the deep downswing. There was
a particular one that had parts that worked perfectly for the
first units that I made myself. I bought a few hundred of them,
had the straps made locally, and had a company called ARC -
(handicapped people given job opportunities) assemble and box
them.
Interviewer:
What is
it made of? What is the tensile strength of the material.
Steve:
They are made of metal, which makes them
virtually unbreakable, and a very heavy nylon strap doubled over
to allow for the plastic dowels to stay in place. (I tested them
with a 300 pound friend of mine extensively). A soft foam tube
allows for a very comfortable grip. Simple, yet very strong,
which is why I give them a lifetime guarantee.
In our
next interview, Steve will share about some new ideas that
have been "baking in his creativity oven" and are almost
ready to share to help with his self improvement fitness
program.
Part of the interview will cover why his website is "obese"
friendly
and why he has a passion to continue to welcome people from all
walks of life. "Fitness Network has something for everyone."
